British postgraduate students have developed a pocket-sized fingerprint scanner that they hope will improve access to care for people living in developing countries. The device wirelessly syncs with health workers’ smartphones via an application that checks patient health records. By tapping into a system that can access and modify downloaded offline health records, the device can connect to local databases in areas with limited mobile connectivity, record any updates to the health records, and sync it to the central database once Internet connectivity returns.
