Health Care Plan Deductibles Are Increasing Seven Times Faster than Wages

According to a Kaiser Family Foundation study released last week, deductibles are increasing dramatically nationwide. Deductibles for individual coverage have increased by approximately seven times as fast as wages and inflation and nearly three times as fast as premiums over the past five years. The average deductible for employee plans offered by smaller business (those with less than 200 employees) are $1,836 on average. Increased cost-sharing through high deductibles and other utilization management policies are a financial strain and deterrent to those seeking care, which is particularly problematic for low to moderate income chronically ill individuals.
