The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI), a group of stakeholders that collaborate to drive the development, evaluation, and appropriate use of AI in healthcare, has introduced draft frameworks for AI assurance labs and model cards aimed at enhancing transparency and trust in healthcare AI tools.
The assurance labs would evaluate AI tools for safety and effectiveness, producing “report cards” to aid stakeholders, such as health systems, in making informed decisions. The model cards, based on HHS’ 31 transparency requirements in the HTI-1 rule, would provide detailed information about AI tools, including their developers, intended uses, targeted populations, data types, risks, and performance metrics.
CHAI’s initiatives align with HHS’ efforts to establish a framework for AI regulation, which is expected to be released by January 2025. While CHAI’s frameworks do not directly impact regulations, they have the potential to shape regulatory approaches. CHAI plans to incorporate public feedback and finalize these frameworks by April 2025. Learn more here.
