Aimed Alliance Launches New York Step Therapy Reform Initiative

0

Building on the step therapy law that was effective as of 2017, Aimed Alliance has launched a new initiative to educate policy makers on the need for step therapy reform in New York. Step therapy policies, also referred to as “fail first,” require insured individuals to try and fail on alternative treatments before the insurer or pharmacy benefit manager will cover the prescribed treatment. These policies can be unethical and inconsistent with sound scientific and clinical evidence and interfere with the practitioner-patient relationship and create significant delays in access to prescribed treatments. Aimed Alliance has drafted fact sheets detailing the reforms needed to the current New York step-therapy law, including added protections for certain chronic conditions, increased reporting and transparency, clinical peer review of step therapy decisions, and strengthened enforcement and patient protections to deter violations of the law. The fact sheets can be found here.
